We have a "46 2N and it certainly does a lot with our thirty-five acres. I cut almost all and it does a great job. We live in Missouri and the terrain is very hilly. We live on a hill and there is not a flat spot on our land. The 2N runs great, but "sometimes" one can hear the tappits mowing up an incline. Recently, I got some new gas (87 octane with alcohol), and it was very noisy. I adjusted the carb. several times, but it continued. Could it have been the gas, or do I need a valve adjustment?

Thanks

I would go with an oil change ( hd 30 wgt ) new filter and if it makes you feel better use higher octain gas. ( wont cost much ). Some use STP oil treatment, its your tractor .

I would put my money on something like the distributor advance or valves. Of course, you could always try the high octane just for kicks and see if it goes away. And let us not overlook the marvels of the marvelous Marvel Mystery Oil to cure what ails yer tractor; even problems you didn't know you had! It'll help clean your valves and cylinder walls. If you notice a drop in oil pressure afterwards, you know you could probably use some new rings and/or valve lapping.

You could have an exhaust leak. But it probably would not hurt to run the valves. And also check the timing, sounds like it could be a little retarded. Your distributor advance may not be working 100%.
