Hey fellas, I read somewhere that when I have a load on the 8N such as when using a back blade to move dirt pile or snow around that you should be running the tractor at a "low" rpm rate, i.e. a low throttle rate. Is this true? Seems to me that when you are working the tractor, would'nt you want the throttle/rpms to be higher so as to get more power out of her? Just another dumd question.
THANKS again for so much help on all of the answered responses..... .Randy

Although it is unlikely anybody using an n series cares much about fuel efficiency, some time back Colorado State Univ published a study on larger tractors that showed that if you run in the highest gear that will do the work with the least throttle that will do the work fuel savings vary from ten to fifteen percent of running lower gear at higher rpm. The same "gear up throttle back" approach also tended to reduce tire slippage. At the gallon an hour rate most n series do this is probably just interesting.

Your mileage may vary

Randy,

I don't know who told you (or wrote) that, but they aren't doing you any favors! The optimum range for power (I've found) is nearly full throttle. I very seldom run my N's less than that unless I'm trying to carefully back up to hook up an implement. Use your own judgement, but you'll find that the tractor will be moire prone to stall, and the PTO will not be turning a full 550 if you are down in engine speed.

JMHO.

Ron
