The difference is addatives...

The GL-1 is 'supposed' to be nothing but oil...

The higher the number (basically), the more addatives which protect gears from 'shear forces' etc...

It is a fact that the higher the sulphur content, the more detrimental to phosphorus bronze parts...

Lots of people will argue that point, but I dare you to try a multiweight oil (like 85-90) in a T-4 or T-5 Jeep CJ Tranny...Nice and quiet for the first few thousand miles...

This is why the Original Ford spec was for Straight 80 Weight in the winter and Straight 90 Weight in the summer (GL-1)...

It is your tractor...Do what you want...But one of the things I do when looking at a tractor is pull the tranny dipstick and look at the oil...GL-1 ia clear dark amber...M2C134D looks like very thin honey...Anything else and you can see the 'sparkles' in the oil...I walk away unless I am looking for a parts rig...Same with a Jeep CJ...Anything in that T-4 or T-5 tranny than ATF, and it is a parts rig...

Salmoneye, Who Has Smoked Exactly One Jeep Tranny And Learned The Hard Way...

Let the flaming begin...

Been reading all this gear oil posting for many years now. Do not remember any one getting the original specification fully correct. Originally in the original owners manuals published for the Ford 8N Tractor at time of construction of the tractor, the Transmission, Hydraulic and differential spec was for "Heavy Duty Motor Oil" SAE 50 or SAE 30 winter. GL-1 was only listed as an alternative. Motor oil would be the best choice as it has the correct additives and rust inhibitors. In addition SAE 50 HD oil would equate to SAE 90++ in gear oil rating, better for my usage. GL-2 later was added as an additional alternate.
