Does a gasket go on both sides of the brake plate on a 9N? Do you guys use a sealant on these gaskets?

YOU NEED SHIMS TO KEEP THE AXLE ENDS FROM TOUCHING.WITH BOTLH TIRES OFF THE AXLES SHOULD TURN IN OPPOSIT DIRECTIONS-IF NOT ADD MORE SHIMS. AS TO GASKETS USE PERMATEX BLUE BUT BE SURE TO USE SOMETHNG OR YOUR GREASE /OIL FROM THE TRANS/DIFFERENTAL WILL LEAK ONTO YOUR BRAKE SHOES AND YOU'LL BE TEARING IT ALL DOWN AGAIN BEACUSE THE BRAKES DON'T WANT TO WORK-BEEN THERE ALREADY.

I think your term gaskets might be referred to as shims. The shims are used for spacing. Won't hurt nutt'n if you put a little sealer on them.

I see in the manual where shims go on before the brake plate to set the axle clearance. My tractor had only a gasket on that side and an additional gasket that went on after the brake plate. Would a gasket also go on before the brake plate? My GUESS is no gasket, just shims before the brake plate and 1 gasket after the brake plate. The parts catalog and the service manual do not clarify it for me.

It has been my experience that if a service manual and/or parts manual is questionable, we have to let our field judgement be our guide.

If you think that you need a gasket on the outside of the brake plate, put one on. will not hurt anything. Actually I forget if my 9N had gaskets there. So, I don't know.

As a preventative measure I just replaced a starter on a piece of equipment. The new one doens't SOUND like the good old one. I checked with the supplier, and, like always, SOUND does not claim defective. QUESTIONABLE!!!!! at least to me. Hope this helps.

First thing Monday morn. I will pay the core value and bring the old starter back to my shop. I will personally rebuild it as though my FINANCIAL well-being depends on it.

ok, i put one, with a thin spray gasket sealer, on BOTH sides of the brake plate. Will do the same on the other axle and likely add a few more for getting the correct axle clearance.
