Hi guy's, I had a mechanic friend tell me that he uses the gas stabilizer called Sta-Bil in all his equipment all year round. Is this stuff safe to use in an 8N all year. He puts some in every tank at every re-fill. Is there any benifit to this and is it safe? Just a thought.
Thanks....Randy

I've used Sta-bil for several years and swear by it. My generator which sits idle for at least six months at a time starts up on the first or second pull.

Sta-bil is a mix of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and various hydrocarbon solvents. The BHT is the same stuff used in processed foods to prevent fats from going rancid. The solvents are there just to hold the BHT in solution (the BHT would otherwise be a white powder).

Its sole purpose is keeping the gasoline from reacting with oxygen in the air and forming varnish. If the tractor will be parked for more than a month or so, it is worth considering the use of Sta-bil.

It isn't harmful to use it in every tankful, but there is no benefit if you are going through the fuel in a reasonable amount of time.

As an aside, there are some people that believe that daily use of BHT on themselves conveys a health benefit, due to its anti-axidant properties. Scientific support for this is, at best, controversial.

Like SouNdguy says, it's used for preserving gas for long periods (BTW that's 6 months before you re-add) and not for every time you fill up. What a waste of $!

Just my .02.. I'm sure others will chime in...
I've used stabil in my gas powered engines ( lawnmowers/weed wackers, tractors, etc ) for a few years now, when i store them for the winter.. also some in any fuel tanks I keep filled.

After I add the stabil, I run the engine a bit then put them away.

While I doubt that running it year round 'hurts' anything.. I doubt you need it. It is a fuel stabilizer designed for storage periods.

My diesel tractor gets power service products.
