They're pretty hard to come by. Not impossible, but difficult. The problem was, that smooth rear hub was cast as a single piece and since it was so large, was prone to getting air pockets inside and cracking after some use. They were only used for the first two years if i'm not mistaken. On top of that, most of them were replaced with the later style riveted hub, and I think Ford had a warranty/recall on them. Occaisionally, you see one that has one smooth hub and one riveted hub, but that just looks goofy. Smooth hubs are now very desireable due to their rarity. Most end up as show tractors.

They were not cast in 1 piece, they fused a alloy steel axle to a cast hub and that is what was weak, if the heat process was not correct it was weak from day 1, Ford did pay for them when they broke in the 40's, do not trust them, 1 just broke last year near me and it had been cracked for a very long time and was just holding by a 1/4" for who knows how long.

I was only referring to the casting as being one piece, not to include the axle itself. As you said, one cracked and had been cracked for a long time. That was the typical problem and accounts for so few of them being left intact today. Hence the increased collector value. Stay away from them if you want a work tractor, but collectors seek them out. I'm surprised that one on ebay didn't get bid on.

Rick did you see at the top of the page why it ended. "The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing." Think maybe some one told him what just the axles are worth? Dave.

Very possible. If anyone is dying to have a smooth hub 9N, let me know. This one is sitting in a consignment yard at a local FNH dealer. The last time I asked, the price was $2500. I've not heard it run, but I could look into it closer. I'd be willing to broker the deal and store it at my place until you can come pick it up. Or I could just give you the phone number of the place where it's sitting. It has aluminum dash, steel hood, and a Sherman of some sort (either over or under...not a combo). Email me if interested.
