Here's another wierd one.....

Hey guys!

I bought a '50 8N last year. It is in relatively good shape EXCEPT for a recently ocurring problem. I am getting oil running out of the breather cap--more some times than others. I am guessing blow-by from worn rings, but here's the wierd part. I doesn't start dripping oil until it warms up. Then, it hardly drips at all until I'm going UPHILL. I get very little drippage on the flat or going downhill, but it will run a veritable STREAM (pencil-lead sized) going downhill. This seems strange to me because the oil filler (breather) tube is on the front of the tractor. Is the increased blow-by because the tractor is working harder going uphill? All comments/suggestions are welcome!

TIA.

Ron

Hmm, dont know, I would drain out all oil, add 5 qts of 30 wght( I know ford says 6 ) see what happens, my 8n was blowing oil out the dipstick tube ( brand new dip stick ) after changing oil and filter, it has since stopped, Im thinking it just had to much oil in it , no smoke and almost no leaks, oil level is staying full.

Ron..... ...sounds like yer overfilled innna crankcase. Ya gotts the correct engine dipstick? p/n 9N-6750, dipstick, 12" long. The tranny oil dipstick p/n 9N-7137-B is only 8 1/4" long. and they are interchangeable.

Its FALL and time for your annual Ford recommended oil change. 6 qts + filter should solve your problem..... ..... Dell

Assuming your oil level is correct, you indeed have a curious problem.

Yes, you will increase blowby wen you load the engine (ike going uphill) because the governor increases your fuel mixture in order to compensate for the increased load. As more fuel is detonated, more oil is vaporized and blown into the crankcase. And yes, blowby happens after engine is warm because oil is now fully circulated and the engine's operating temperature is vaporizin more oil.

The unbelieveable part is your "pencil size stream" going downhill. The only things I can think of that would cause that is (1) a way overfilled crankcase OR (2) someone's installed an oil slinger at the bottom of your #2 rod bearing and it's slingin' oil up your breather tube OR (3) your breather cap is not the correct one/facing the proper direction/not filled with mesh.

Shoulda read more carefully. You say this is a recent problem? Guess what? You got a broken ring or RINGS if it's a sudden problem. Better spend some time and do a dry and wet copression check. Pull all plugs, connect comp gauge and spin her at least 5 revolutions using the starter. Do this for each cylinder. Then add 1 tbspn oil in each cylinder and retest each cylinder. Write down results AND the condition of each cyl's spark plug.

If adding oil raises the compression by more than about 5 pounds, your problem is definately rings.

DON'T RUN HER ANY MORE until you check compression AND THE OTHER ITEMS THAT YOUR COMP TEST SUGGEST YOU CHECK. A broken rings will disintegrate, cause metal particles to be circulated into moving parts, and cause major engine failure problems (like thrown rods, etc.)
