My father-in-law has an 8N with a problem I hope you can help me with. The PTO works its way out to the rear and looses contact with the gears inside. Is this hard to fix and how do I go about it. He has a finish mower on it.

Roger..... ..there is a "snap-ring" that hold the PTO bearing inplace on the shaft. Its been known to get "un-snapped" and generally once a snap-ring gets un-snapped, generally buggers up the snap-ring groove and the snap-ring won't stay snapped into the groove thus your PTO shaft won't stay put.

Removal of the PTO shaft is a 4-bolt, 15 minute job, if'n ya parks yer tractor nose down innna deep ditch so you don't haffta drain 5 gals of hydro fluid. With PTO shaft in hand, you can "inspect" for snap-ring problems.

I would recommend you seriously consider the merits of replacing your current PTO shaft with a modern 1-3/8" PTO shaft. It'll have new bearings and seals too..... ....Dell
