2 weeks since the fire. The basement is dug, took 12 hours of Hoe-Ram & 11 hours of high-hoe plus 5 hours for rock truck rental. The good news is that we have enough acreage to dispose of the rock on site, cutting the cost in half. The other good news is I have three FORDS on site and have had a lot of seat time. Also met neighbours we didn't know we had. Sons will put footings in Mon. WE are going to build with "ARXX" blocks, these give good insulation and are easy to use. Eliminates the need for block layer. BURT.

Hi Burt, Glad to hear the new construction is going fast, you will probably be finished on the exterior work before the winter weather gets started. Cheers, Murray

ARXX (brand name) blocks are pre-formed sterofoam blocks 4'x16". Footings are poured in normal way, blocks are laid up to 10' high, rebar is added, fill with cement, put in floor joist , add next layer of blocks. Easily used for basement and all floors, with the thermo mass it is rated @ R51. There are strips to screw dry wall or siding. They are made with 2" sterofoam on inside and outside with 6" cavity in the centre for cement. BURT.

Sounds like ICF, Insulated Concrete Forms. Hopefully, next spring, we will start on our new house and it will be an ICF house. Four years ago when we retired in Atlanta GA and moved to Sunset Louisiana, within one year our new home would be built, but the stock market started to fall at the same time we retired so we have put off building. But when we do, living in hurricane country, it will be a reinforced concrete house.
Good luck to you on your construction.

Our good fortune is that we have invested some money in FORD tractors and now we are going to sell some duplicate tractors and some equip. I think on can get by with 40 instead of 50 tractors. We have decided to make the new "cottage" totally winterized and much larger, as this is the market trend. I don't think we would ever live there all year as it is only 6 miles from the farm to the cottage. BURT.

Hey Bishop,

It has been my experience, at least in the Pensacola, FL area, that, no matter the construction, homeowner's insurance is 3 times more expensive than the property taxes. So, I have to go "self-insured".
