There is a set screw on each side of the transmission that has a screwdriver slot in it. There is one on each side.
Remove this set screw and there should be a spring about 3/8" diameter and 1" long. I am not sure which side of the transmission has the set screw for 1st gear and third but I think it is the left side.
Remove the screw on the left side and try to remove the spring and ball with a magnet.
The ball may be worn out.
Give it a try and email me back.
It is about 2AM here in Mich now and bedtime but will try tommorrow to get you a picture even though you won't need it. The ball is spring loaded by the set screw pushing on the spring and ball. The ball slides into and out of a set of notches on the shift rod in side the transmission.
Give it a try.
Jim
