have just installed new rear axle outside seals and one new bearing (other one fine) installed new brakes. have shims and reinstalled axles. Have th load about right where turning one forward makes other go back. Here is question. Should ther be a clunking noise in the rear end when we turn the axles and hubs by hand after they are all tighten up? The clinking noise is coming from withing the trumpet/rear end. Did not notice this when removeing axles but did not turn them then. Also ther were no shims on this tractor when i took it apart. help

Under rotational load there should be nothing that "clunks" in the gear train if everything is like it should be, assuming the rotation is constant. The axles are splined and engage gears that are carried in the differential which gets rotation from the engagement of the ring and pinion. Sounds like a lot of stuff but the important part is that they are all constantly meshed and therefore should not make any noise that is intermittent, if everything is OK. The differential assembly is supported on the ends by tapered roller bearings as is the pinion. If the roller bearings are bad, they would be more apt to make a grinding or howling noise that would more constant. Intermittent noise suggests to me that there is possibly a chipped gear tooth that allows the normally smooth mesh to be interrupted. This is something that you should take care of. Loose metal from chipped gears or failed bearings is bad.

Another thought that I had is the PTO. I could be way off but it if the pto is engaged it could be driven by the rotation of the wheels and issues within the pump could be making that noise? Don't know if this possible but I've had my pump clunk a few times in my 2N and it doesn't sound very good.

If you end up having to replace the differential gears or bearings, post back and I can give you some specific pointers. Did some of that last year and still have fond memories of the process.

Good luck
