I did some research and found that pennzoil makes a 90 wt. mineral gear oil that will not harm yellow metal. I changed my gear oil in my 51 8n with this stuff and it works great. You can check it out at www.pennzoil.com it's called 409 mineral gear lube. It's worth reading. I would like to know what you guys think about this.
pat.

Pat, As long as it meets the -134 spec it's good to go.

since N trannys are non-syncro, I'd like to know if there's enough yellow metal in one to make this issue that important.

Got my 5 gal. of GL-1 at wallmart but haven't had time to do the brakes yet.

Sure seems like extreme pressure qualities would be desirable in a draft machine's gearboxes if they were at all compatible.

I think the yellow metal in a 9n is in the hyd. pump.

The pennzoil 409 mineral gear oil was less than $30.00 including tax.
