Help! I have had a 1949 8N 6-volt for 3 years with few problems starting other than needing a new battery several months ago. Now I have no sound of starter when I push starter button. Battery is fine, have cleaned terminals and checked wiring, but no go!!! What is my next step without replacing everything? Starter button? Does the starter switch mechanism(Neutral gear) ever go bad? Toggle on/off switch? Starting motor or relay? Thanks....

Okay...I first tried grounding the little middle terminal with starter solenoid attach screws. Nothing but sparks. Voltage at pushbutton screw 6 volts, drops to about zero. Next I connected solenoids big terminals. Nothing but sparks. Replaced starter cable, still nothing... so... that means bad starter motor? or both solenoid and starter motor? Thanks...

Peg..... ....yep, kinda sound like starter motor problems somewharrs. Ain'tchur solenoid. If'n starter motor don't whirr, probably the bendix is jammed into the flywheel ring gear. As Steve said, back off the starter 7" long screws just a little bit and wiggle/pry around. If'n that don't do it, then yer gonna haffta pull the starter for closer inspection.

WARNING: you may haffta re-home your starter drive back to end of long starter shaft. Can be done using little screwdrivers but if'n ya gotts a wirebrush onnna grinder, you can "spin" that drive back to where its suppost to stay after yer engine starts.

TIP: put some 5/16 nuts (NC) on those long screws so the starter don't fall apart while yer jigglein' it 'round. Otherwize, ya'll larn some new french words gettin' the brushes back inna their holders (use wooden matchsticks) Some people remove their oilfilter canister to get enuff wiggle room. I don't remember doin' that when I replaced my starter bendix. Recommend the improved "clutch" style starter drive, it'll keep crankin' without kickin' out onna starter cough..... .....Dell

Can the tractor be rolled when in neutral? If not, the starter may be jammed into the flywheel ring gear locking starter and engine up. If so, back off 2 bolts holding starter about 1/2 inch and force a screw driver or wedge between the frame and the starter so the starter moves forward. This should free the bendix from the ring gear. Good luck. Steve 8N 169302

Peg..... ...assuming you have the OEM 3-terminal starter solenoid. Make certain your tranny is in NEUTRAL. Then ground the little middle terminal with a screwdriver blade to the starter solenoid attach screws. Starter turns over? yes, ya gotts a bad push'em button by tranny shifter. No? ya gotts a bad solenoid (maybe)

Could have "open" wire between little terminal and starter pushbutton by tranny shifter, check by pulling it, or some sort of long jumper wire, doesn't haffta be very thick, 16 ga (about 1/16" dia) will do. ...Or... measure the voltage at the tranny button screw, should be 6 volts until you push the button, at which time should go to "zero". Never goes to zero, then you really do have a bad tranny starter pushbutton which will require removing the tranny shifter plate to get to the attach nut.

As a general rule the 8N's neutral safety switch interlock is "bulletproof", but can be mucked up by bad gearshifter mechanisms, but then you'd be complaining about tranny shifting problems.

Next, use a pair of pliers handles, reach around the solenoid's BIG terminals. Starter turns over? yes, its yer solenoid. No? probably yer big battery cable corroded up insides where you can't see it. Becertain your starter cable is size one/naught (1/0), thick as yer thumb.

Starter turns over with pliers handles, or bygrounding the little middle terminal, WATCH yer radiator fan blades, do they turn? NO? its yer starter bendix drive which will require removing your starter motor for replacement..... ...HTH, Dell
