The mistery deepens....

Hey!

Well, over the past week or so, I've been posting concerning a problem I've been having with my '50 8N. Oil has been dripping (running!) out of the air breather after the tractor warms up. Several had suggested an overfilled crankcase (I changed oil and only added 5 quarts--that wasn't it), another thought a broken ring (that may still be the cast since my oil pressure on one cylinder was only 80 p.s.i.).

Well, yesterday, I wanted to complete the final hogging of the year of the 10 acres of lots I mow. I took off early from work, and started mowing about 1:30. I had only mowed about 15 monutes when it started 'surging'--another of the little tricks it will sometimes do, though usually after an hour or so. The oil had started to drip out of the breather, too, despite my having put screen wire in the breather tube (a suggestion from Dell). DANG, DANG!! Well, at least I was close to the house. I fired up my compressor and pulled the carburetor off. Disassembled the whole thing. WHOA! Somebody has rebuilt this thing--all the brass internals were shiny and the bowl gasket was new. I blew air through all the orifices and openings. Didn't seem to get anything out. Oh well, put it back together ('bout half an hour). When I hit the starter and readjusted the idle and high speed needle, it ran like a TOP! I finished the mowing about 2 hours later without a glitch. And you know what? The oil breather didn't leak a DROP!! What?? Faster R.P.M., higher crankcase pressure (I assume, anyway), and NO LEAKS?! I'm TOTALLY baffled! Don't get me wrong, I'm REALLY GLAD it's working better, but I have no clue as to why the leak stopped!

Sorry for the long post, but I'd really like opinions on this. Evil Steve, I still plan to to rings as soon as possible.

Ron, who's obviously not much of a tractor mechanic.

Are we to assume the engine only blew oil when it started surging? If so (and this is a real reach) it could be that your ring gaps, which are probably close to max.by now, lined up which caused loss of compression on one cylinder (surging) and pressured the crankcase (blowing oil). Blowing oil is usually a good sign of ring problems. When the rings moved back out of alinement you regained compression (engine ran smooth again and the oil blowing quit. Or you do voodo.

cdb,

No, it leaked oil even when not surging. It usually happened after the tractor warmed up (3/4 to 1 hr.). Maybe the increased r.p.m. that I got after cleaning the carburetor loosened the stuck ring?? I'm baffled!

Ron, I think souNguy is right. Instead of a broken ring you may have had a stuck ring that loosened up. Keep checking the compression and see what happens. Sure glad you didn't have to take 'er apart. Keep us posted.

I know, I know. I spelled 'mystery' wrong. It was early when I posted (anyway, that's the story I'm stickin' to!)...

Ron,
Could you come 'lay hands on' my Jubilee's hydraulics... it won't lift very good after it gets hot. Aar Aar Aar :-)

Maybee you were holding your mouth just right this time?

good luck either way.

Might take some time every now and then to check compression again... see what your compression is doing over time. Obviously a broke ring never heals... but if you see the pressure going up.. perhaps just a stuck ring? let us know how it turns out.

Hmm, you might blame Mother Nature, Im thinking a mouse , wasp or whatever built a nest in your exhaust system, this will cause backpressure loss of power ond oil to flow out the breather cap, after some use you burned and blew it out the taitpipe,
