I managed to get the lift arms off the shaft today. It took a lot of heat and pounding with a heavy brass hammer I borrowed from a mechanic friend. The brass hammer was not as harsh on the lift arm as a regular one would have been. Removed the cover and inspected the underside. Found the cam follower pin worn over 50%. I have been reading the archives about the cam follower pin but was not sure exactly what it was. Now I know. The ram arm was also worn some. There was a ridge on the left side of the cam about a 16th of an inch where the pin wore into the cam. I plan on replacing the lift arm bushings, hone ram cylinder and replace piston with an NAA style with O ring,(and now replace cam follower pin) pump relief valve and adjust linkages. I dont think the cam on the ram arm is bad enough to replace. Installing the cam follower pin should be a big improvement. My engine overhaul turned out so well I thought I would try to improve the hydraulic lift. It has been slugish for years. Thanks to all who have shared thier expertise on this board. Rick(Ga)

You are going to need some expert advice and something to use for a reference point to adjust that lift right.

See the attached link.

Sounds like you're well on your way. Just curious, what made you suspect the lift arm bushings needed replacement? Removing the arms sound like a lot of work. Steve 8N 169302

Steve, The left side lift arm had a lot of up-and-down play where the shaft comes out of the cover. The right side is fairly tight. After I got the lift arm off the bushing was'nt worn as much as I thought but still had a good bit of play or loosness. The bushings are thicker than I thought. I did not want the shaft to ware into the lift housing. Besides, the lift needed some attention anyway. Rick(Ga)
