Can the "pressure relief valve (8N638)" be removed by taking the "side plate", or must the top (which is ver hevey) be removed?

Thank you

Well, remove 5 gallons of fluid, remove right side inspection plate, now you can almost see that relief valve, Remove the pto shaft ( 4 11/16 bolts at the rear end) pull it straight out , now you can see the relief valve and get a normal 11/16 wrench on it. never did like working in the dark under oil by feel with a special wrench . The top aint that heavy, no need to remove it .

Don't need to remove top cover. Gotta remove the PTO shaft though unless you use a specially bent wrench (check archives, some recent posts as to method/s). Feel inside the inspection hole, you will feel a sparkplug-like gizmo at the bottom of the pump. I forget the wrench size required to remove it, it's in the archives also.

Paul..... ...what twopops sez, 11/16". Bend it sidewize (the hardway, use flame wrench) in form of letter "C" to go around the PTO shaft which is just above the sparkplug shaped pressurer relief valve. You do know the true measure of a skilled mechanic is how many bent, cut, and kluged-up wrenches he has in a special hidey-way drawer.

I'd drain your 5 gals of hydro-tranny fluid so'd you beable to see what yer doing. 1-fill'em-up by the tranny shifter, 3 drains. Drain the square diffy plug first 'cuz it'll pee innna big buckett with some modcum of accuracy. Then the 3" tranny plug. Then the 3" hydro plug..... ....Dell
