I've just purchased this, but not intentionally. I though I was purchasing a combo, at least that was what the seller said he had. Yes, there's always a danger in buying sight unseen, despite every precaution taken over the phone. (But the seller said he'd take it back. )

The seller said it came from a 9N but it has a helical output shaft. I've read that all Shermans have these. My transmission has straight cut gears. Would I have to change the countershaft if I went ahead to install a Sherman? I presume changing the Sherman output to a straight gear would be easier, if I could even find the part?

To use the Sherman, you will need to change the mating gear in the tractor transmission. I have never heard of Sherman making a straight cut output shaft. I've heard many times of people changing the transmission gear.

The 9N (1939 to 1941) used the straight cut gear. 2N/8N models (1942 an later) used a helical cut gear.

Send it back. Especially since you probably paid the combo price for it. A 'pre-trans' step up won't do you much good unless you need it to offset the slow ground speed of an 'after trans' creeper like the Everett trencher trans. I bought a couple of combos to use along with the creepers and guess what? The ground speed is now calculated TOO slow so I'm going to have to consider using one of the step-ups I also mistakenly bought. At least you just got lied to. I bought two step ups out of sheer ignorance before I learned what the h__l I really needed to be looking at. SHEESH.. I needed to READ more.
Good luck. Hope you can really get your $ back.

Why go through the hassle of changing parts to make it work when it's not really what you want in the first place? I'd take the guy up on the offer to take it back. Lesson learned, now you'll know the right questions to ask in the future. Keep looking for what you really want.
