here's my story when the tractor is under a heavy load such as bushhoging or plowing it'll last 15 - 20 min and die like i shut the key off. polish the points with sand paper and your good for another round. it has a new 12v conversion, 12v coil, rotor, cap, plugs and wires, many points and condensors, shoot i even put a small 12v bulb in between the coil and points ( it did help a little but made the tractor loose a little power)there it is any insight would be appriceated.

Omen..... .there are 4 general heat related runtime issues with N-Tractors.
1) runs for 'bout an hr and quits, letter cool 2+ hrs overnite an it'll restart.
Bad frontmount ignition coil, not your stated problem.
2) runs for 'bout 5 mins and quits, wait 'bout 15 mins an it'll restart.
Clogged fuel filters, not your stated problem. 3) runs for 'bout 1 min and quits, wait 'bout 15 mins an it'll restart.
Bad condenser, not your stated problem.
4) runs for 'bout 15 mins and quits, wait 'bout 30 mins to cool while yer polishing yer points an it'll restart.
Does that sound like your stated problem?
Its gunked up ignition switch contacts. You doubt? Next time it quits runnin', quickly by-pass your ignition switch with a jumper wire and prove me wrong..... ....respectfull, Dell

thx brother N'er i hope not to prove u wrong, but when i converted to 12v i put in a regular auto ignition key switch and a solonoid. it only takes me bought one min. or less to polish'em (im getting good at it!). a reacharound and she's running like a kitten agin. i put a pencil to it and figured (im 28 and this N will pull my casket to the grave yard) that in the long run ill be better than even money, so i ordered a electronic ignition from genesee to remedy this and future problems (hopefully!).

Dell, Good information, thanks for the list. I had a situation similar but different situation that I would like your opinion on. My '50 8N has all new parts; front mount 12V coil, AC Delco p/n 12336832 0.8 ohm resistor, plugs, copper core wires, ventilated points, condensor. The ignition switch may be original. I took my 8N and rusty 14" 2 bottom to plow day last weekend. Only Ford there. Started in 2nd gear 2200 rpm full throttle, dropped the plow in Indiana clay, and tractor lugged down to 1800 rpm (guesstimate). I did this for 3 straight hours. At the end of my last run the tractor missed a beat for 1 second. I stopped to check gas, had 1/2 tank left. Started doing it a few more times. The engine would run hard and just miss for one second. This was fairly intermittenet, once every 10 or 30 seconds during an extremely hard pull. It was time to take my girl to the pumpkin patch so I loaded up and went home. Tractor has never done this before, and I use it all the time for mowing and other tasks. My first thoughts were overheated coil or condesor. What are yours? Next year (which I am allready looking forward to) I may install a pusher fan just for plow day. Thank you. Philip.

Phil..... ...if'n ya been runnin hard, and you had the more popular hotter sparkies like Champ H-12 or AutoLite AL-437, you just might need the cooler OEM Champ H-10's for plowin' only.

Its so simple to make and carry a short jumper wire with alligator clippies incase its yer ignition switch cuttin out on you.

While a pusher fan to reduce heat load over engine and past the operator during hot heavy load operations, most of the time, there's no noticeable effect. Surprizingly enuff, a 4-bladed puller fan moves more air thru the radiator than the pushers..... ...Dell

I put a resistor on my (converted to 12V) 861 to save points burn -- NAPA has'em for about ten bucks -- calls'em "coil resistor". -- has worked fine for years.

You're on the right track but a small bulb will not have adequate resistance to protect the points. Right off the top of my head I don't know the PN# that goes with the Tisco 12v coil but I got both the coil and resistor from my local Ford dealer. If you are sure that you already have the proper resistor, replace the condensor with your old one. A bad condensor will cause premature point burning, and a bad one right out of the box is rare.... but not unheard of.
