I need to cut brush on either side of mowed paths. The brush includes shrubs and also trees of upwards of 1" diameter, 12' tall. Doing it by hand with chain saw, pruners, and a Stihl weed wapper with a saw blade or ninja star blade is very slow going. What I have read is that tractor mount side bar mowers vibrate a lot and are not very good at their job. I believe there is such a thing as a towable PTO powered side bar mower. Who makes them, what are they called, and are they any good and does anyone know of a used one for sale within 600 miles of New York State? I have a '51 8N.

The most common in our area is New Idea, they make a trailer sycle mower, PTO driven and they work well on hay, weeds and such. However if I see my bar heading into a 1" sapling, I'm in reverse 'bout as quick as that puppy can go, I'm not into changing blades or bars anymore than I have to. Have you considered roundup, crossbow, or one of the liquid mowers? Personally if I can't cut it with a brush hog, I'll spray it, or learn to appreciate it's beauty. New Holland made a model 455 and now makes a 456 pull behind, pto driven with a hydraulic lift cutterbar, but is not made for trees.

I saw an older new idea towable sickle bar mower at the ford new holland dealer ship in cortland ny. I do not know if it is for sale. I read a person was killed when a side mount mower on a farmal h caused the tractor to roll over in the ditch. I used to clear small brush with an allis chalmers B with a side mount mower, on larger brush I would put the tracor in neutral and let the mower work through the brush or get off the tractor and cut the tree with a bow saw, I carried on the tractor. Tractor in neutral hand brakes locked. There was a story in a farm magazine of a farmer who used this method to clear cland for planting.

Peter..... ....I've seen pictures of off-set tow-behind brushog type mowers for 4WD japanese quarter horses. Go check a RV place out.

Sicklebar mowers don't mow 1" tree trunks but they do amputate 1" doggie legs. Sicklebars mowers are great for mowing hay but NOT for clearing brush.

Me? If'n I can't drive my 8N with 5' 3-point brushog over it, it don't need mowin'. I've cleared a lotta blackberries and alder that way but don't tell the Endangered Species cops. Salmon are an endangered species and blackberry bushes are indicator plants of environmentaly sensitive salmon habitat. Salmon, the only endangered species you can buy over the counter at the grocery store, go figger..... ....Dell

Peter
My uncle wanted to do the same thing to an old logging road and he borrowed a 6' pull behind mower(bush hog)and made an extension to his rear hitch (3000 ford dsl) and shifted his rear hitch to the right and pulled the bush hog at a slight offset approx 2 to 3 feet on the right side of the tractor. I think the PTO shaft had enough play in it that he didn't have to extend it. He said he played He77 tring not to bust the "U" joints because the shaft was shifted so far.

If you are talking about a sicklebar mower.. I think you'll hit a problem with 1" woody material. There are disc saws though that are essentially mounted circular saw blades that fit a side bar, etc.. but are really expensive.

I've seen the sickle bar mowers in tow behind setup.. I think in the latest n-news mag.. though I still think the big stuff will give you problems...

Perhaps others with sickle bar mowers will give their advice.

i own a 6' sickle bar mower run from the 3ph and pto, old. when it is working, it is nice. less draw on hp from the 8n (read gasoline). but, they are prone to clog, and require top condition teeth/cutters to work properly (read maintenance).
another advantage is that you can drive where you have already mowed, unlike brush hogging. trade-offs. i agree, a tow unit shouldn't transfer as much vibration to the tractor/operator.

Don't know of something that will fit an N but you might consider renting, or if the work demands it, buying one of those DR heavy duty walk behind brush mowers. I have seen one in action on some property and it was pretty impressive. It was like having a walk behind bushhog. You can also find a used Gravely every now and then that had a 30 or 36 inch heavy mower on it and they would do a lot of damage to brush and small trees of the size you mention. I saw one sell for 200 bucks at an auction in GA about 3 months ago.
