I have an 8N which I purchased this summer. I have used it twice this year. One summer day, the outside tempature was around 90F. The other time was this fall, the temp. around 70F. In the summer after mowing 15 minutes it started to sputter and loose power. At idle speed it was ok. After it set for a hour or so it was ok. This fall after mowing about 1 1/2 hours the same thing again. Never did die, put ran rough, sputtered and major lose of power. Any ideas why?
Any help would be nice.

If it runs for 15 min. to an hour and a half, it can't be fuel, unless your tank vent is plugged. Symptoms are typical of coil failure...gets hot, tar melts, breaks down insulation resistance, sparks go south.
Cools off and is OK until it gets hot again.

Check the ignition switch by jumpering it off. See if that helps. --Rob

years ago my 801 did about the same thing and after looking all over to find the problem it ended up being the coil going bad ran good for an hour or so then started to miss and run rough now I'm not saying that is your problem but its worth a try I got lucky I just went out back and popped the hood on an old car I had and stole the coil from it and its still there Hope this helps

Standard diagnostic procedure would start with checking fuel flow at the bottom of the carb by pulling the plug in it. flow should be a good healthy steady stream that does not taper off. If not, there are 3 filters.. one in the carb elbow, one in the fuel bowl, and one in the tank on top of the fuel valve.

Next is to check for vacume leak... can be anything from a bad carb gasket to a manifold gasket.. to a cracked manifold. As a hint.. if choke helps the poer loss.. it may be a vacume leak, ( or cloged fuel line / plugged tank vent). A plugged tank vent is easy to diagnose from there.. as opening the gas cap immediatly restores smooth running. Usually it takes about 15 minutes to pull a vacume on the tank if the vent is plugged and the cap is sealed..etc.

If that isn't it, look at the fuel itself.. lotsa water?

Getting air from the breather? Check by temporarily removing the breather tube to the carb...

Next move to the electricals.. look for loose connections.. remember.. keep everything clean bright and tight.

Are your plugs good? any oil fouled? Spark good and blue?

Work thru it till you find it... basically all you gotta have is spark at the right time, fuel, and air...

good luck
