VOLTAGE REGULATOR????

I recently had my 52 8N torn down to replace the head gasket. Finished up, put it back together, cranked and ran fine. :-) The last couple times I used it, it started running rough and the battery wouldn't hold a charge. Today it quit running with no warning, other than running a little rough, and the points look burnt. I had the battery disconnected while working on the head. My questions is this: Does the polarization on the voltage regulator need to be crossed after the battery is disconnected? If so, would the points burn up becuase of not cross-polarizing the VR? Thanks in advance!!

Ron,

Unusually fast wear or burning of the points is caused by the condenser going bad, it's usually a good idea to replace the points and condenser together.

If you think you're having problems with the charging system being caused by the regulator, the first step I would take is, while the tractor is running, open the battery cover and using the handle of a screwdriver, tap the regulator sharply a couple of times and then check your charging rate again. A lot of times the contacts will tend to get a bit sticky from sitting for an extended period of time. Good luck.
