8N suddenly quit

I started my 8N up last night, it started right up but after getting it out of the shed it suddenly quit, just as if the switch had been turned off. It wouldn't start again. I replaced all the wiring last year and it has run like a champ until last night. Couldn't see any loose wires, checked the carb to see if it was getting gas and it is. Anyone have any ideas?

my past experience has taught me that when a engine dies with no sputtering or coughing it is most likely points or condenser or both.

It sounds like that is the direction most things are pointing. Thanks for the input.

If everything checks out ok on the primary side of the ignition try replacing the condenser. I have seen a periodically shorted condenser cause your type of problem. You probably don't have a fuel problem unless the choke butterfly came loose and lodged in there in the closed position but that is pretty far out.

I sure appreciate all the good advice and tips I have been getting. I am going to look closer at spark and fuel flow tomorrow. Thanks again.

Ignition switch is easy to check like Tim says, and easy to jump. Pop the cap and see if the point gap is ok. If that's not it, get your timing light out & check for a spark. Next, with the points open, check for about 6.1 volts across the points. Try rubbing the points together; sometimes the look ok, but have enough pits that they won't conduct current. If you are getting the timing light to come on and the gap is correct, I'd then start checking fuel; step 1, gas in the tank & cut-off turned out 2 or more turns? Take the gas cap off in case of vacumn lock. Unscrew the fuel line at the carb & check fuel flow. If that's ok, check the screen in the elbow. After that, pull the carb & check for a sticking needle valve.

Did your starter turn the engine over? Mine seems to be cranking fine, just won't restart.

Bruce, thanks for the information. I don't have a timing light and have to admit that I don't know much if anything about working inside the distribuitor. I did check fuel flow from the line at the carb and it seems good. Can't see a screen in the elbow. I don't seem to be getting much fuel into the bottom of the carb now however. I thought that maybe I flooded it when trying to restart, but when I pulled the plug from the bottom of the carb no fuel drained out. Will pull the carb out and check it through if I don't have any spark at the spark plugs tomorrow. Is that what you would recommend?

this happens to me when my keyswich is acting up. watch the ammeter - it should toggle left and right as the points are opening and closing -as the engine is cranking over. if not check the key swich.

I replaced the keyswitch when I rewired, the ammeter does move while I am cranking the engine. Have new plug wires, new plugs but could be a problem with the points. I'll check it out. Thanks!

Fuel, air and spark. Guess I would go after spark, now. Check points, ignition switch, etc.

Well, I had a few minutes tonight to check things out. I pulled each spark plug and have a strong spark on each one. I took to fuel line off of the carb and took the elbow out but there is no filter on it so I went to the local Ford dealer and they had one with a filter on it.
I am now leaning toward a carb problem and will tear into it tomorrow. Does that sound like the direction to go?
I'll let you know what I find.
