I was wondering what rpm you guys bushhog at? It seems clear that second gear is a no no so what about first? Should I set my proof meter at 540 rpm or run it wide open? I have seen a lot of discusion about this but it's always about the gear and little about actual rpm. Let me know what yall think. THANX

If you check the archives on this Board, you will see that the experts don't recommend bushogging with an 8n in second gear. The 8n second gear is wimpy, unlike the 9n 2n. FYI

Fred's advice is good, you want the front slightly lower so you cut only once! Zane, our expert, says 2nd gear can be damaged from bushhoging. We mowed 100s of acres with newish red and gray Fords in 2nd with no problems. But, learning from Zane, I immediately would go to 1st in any tough going with these older tractors. The correct pto speed will be pretty close to the SAE recommended 540 rpm if you have a tach. You do need an Overrunning Clutch PTO extension.

Yes the PTO clutch that you mentioned is a very necessary thing for safety.

If you have to mow in first gear only, you need to sharpen your blades or tune up or rebuild your engine. You didn't say what tractor your using but a good running 9/2N with sharp blades will mow all day in second gear and a 8N will mow the thinner stuff in third gear. (with a 6' mower) To up it's abilities, set the front of it to 5" off ground and back of mower to 6". This is easiest on tractor as it gives the mower a way to get rid of the cuttings quicker. Most tend to mow too close, too hard on equipment and requires too much power from tractor. If you don't have position control on your tractor's hydraulics, hang it on stay chains to keep it at correct height. Then you should be able to go like 7734 in 2nd or 3rd gear at any rpm you feel comfortable with. These tractors will run all day at WOT (wide open throttle) but most run them at about 2/3. Don't even look at the tachometer, as the other post says-listen to the mower. It will sing when it's happy. L8R----Fred OH

Mow at what ever speed and gear works good with what you are mowing; Speed and gear will vary with what you are cutting. When you are doing it 'right' the ol' tractor will 'feel good'. My Bushhog #205 has a slight 'sing' to it when it is right. Have mowed many hours without the benefit of any indication of speed or rpm other than sound and feel. Good luck, be carefull, and have fun! ray

I'm probably wrong ( not like THAT has ever happened before!) but I believe 1500 engine RPM is 540 PTO RPM. About 3/4 throttle. You want to use whatever gear gives you a satisfactory cut. If you're cutting light stuff 2nd would be O.K., heavy stuff would require a lower ground speed. It's a trial and error kind of thing depending on your conditions.

Then the governor must be set a higher RPM. At what RPM is the governor set. My governor is set at 1750 ROM which is 540 PTO RPM according to the instrument. My tractor is one of Fords cousins.

Thanks.

The correct governed no load speed on an N tractor is 2200 rpm.

Interesting question since I thought the governor was to be set at 540 RPM PTO speed.

Thanks.
