Its that time of year again when we will all be wandering round the woods with guns. Lets all be real careful out there both from the point of view of each others safety and also not giving anti-gun and animal welfare groups any ammunition ( bad pun ) to use against us. Good hunting to all who participate.

Thanks for the post, Norman. I've been hunting for a lot of years and each year I get more and more frustrated with the folks that don't have any respect for the sport ... these folks aren't communists or anti-constiutionalists ... they are:

A) the fools who drive along the back roads in their pick-up at 10 mph trolling for dear. B) the idiots who shoot near houses. C) the nimrods who leave trash in the woods, drive their trucks and ATVs on other people's land without permission and leave ruts in fields etc.

These people tick me off far more than the anti-gun crowd. They are far more dangerous and they encourage people to post more and more land each year.

And I'll bet that they ain’t soda cans! Ya gotta love it when guys go out on your property with loaded high-powered rifles and get drunk.

I'm torn. In good conscience, I'm not sure that I can leave my property unposted anymore. I want to allow folks to use my land ... but the few rotten apples are dangerous enough that I don't think that I can allow just anyone onto my property anymore ...

There are a lot of good, responsible hunters out there ... but there are just enough YAHOOs out there to ruin it for everyone else.

There’s already been one hunting fatality in northern Vermont this year ...

Last year a road hunter took a shot at a buck that was 20 feet from the front door of a friend of mine ... Really smart. Shooting from the road, towards a house ... and then folks complain when others post their land ...

Tick me off because it gives all of us a bad name.

It should be a crime to drink and carry a gun...even for hunting. Even worse, drinking, driving the roads with a gun "hunting". I see them every year, as someone else said driving the back roads at 10 mph with camo or orange on (who knows why in the pickup?). I have posted all my land and let no one hunt, although I feel I should not have to post it....if it is not your land you should not be there without obtaining permission first. I even lost respect for the "mushroom hunters" last year when one stopped while I was fixing some fence and showed me one he had taken from my property (again, no permission, and signs everywhere). My 2 cents, if you are going to hunt either do it on your own land or obtain permission from the landowner and know the property boundary. We would all be safer this way. Respectfully

I agree with you FC, but I have to say that I've never had a mushroom hunter point a loaded gun at my head as I was walking down a public road. I have had a dear hunter draw bead on me ...
I assure you that I look nuthin' like a white tail.

We need more sportsmen like hunters like SteveB with respect for others and their property. My father owned the place I live on now for several years and I recall an incident with a 'trapper'. The individual never asked permission, but dad never said anything figuring he was hurting nothing. One morning dad was driving down the road going to feed, and noticed what appeared to be an abandoned truck pulled off the road and stopped to see if anyone was around. Seeing no one near he proceeded to feed the cattle. When he returned down the road the 'trapper' stopped him and proceeded to "tear him a new one" over missing traps from his pickup. Dad tried to tell him he never stole his traps, had no use for them, and it was likely another vehicle which had driven by. The guy still insisted dad had stolen them, threatening him, and name calling (use your imagination) in the process. Dad then insisted he remove all his traps and never come back. Even then he insisted he had "the right" to trap along the stream and said he was going to call the conservation agent. Dad invited him to use his telephone to call but he declined (likely knowing the outcome). He never returned to trap. I would have no problem with the occassional mushroom hunter, etc, but sadly I have never been asked permission to enter my property. I have found individuals on it though which I promptly tell (not ask) to leave. I do have to watch as my property is hunted vigourously through the windows of pickups creeping down the road.

I like it, Steve. You can hunt on my property anytime ... Stop by the house for a beer when you are done and the weapons are put away.
I'll show ya the work I've done on my tractor. 1953 Jubilee.
