Broken ring gear?

Recently the starter seemed to be having problems, so I had it reworked. After installation it was still a little noisier than usual. This morning it started right up to mover it out of the barn. Upon returning to restart, the starter would just spin without turning over the engine.
Removed the starter and returned it to the electric shop and it checked out fine. They told me to check the ring gear by using a screw diver and try to turn it and see if the tractor moved.
You could rotate the gear and the tractor didn't move. I also noticed some of the teeth were almost worn off. I have two manuals, new and old. I have never split a tractor before, but have had a lot of mechanical and maintenance experience. Do you all thing I can do it? What are some of the other things to look for and replace at the same time?

Thanks

If the ring gear is not slipping on the fly wheel it is not loose.

If the tractor will not move when the flywheel is turned and the transmission is in gear then you have other problems. Did you have the tractor in it's highest gear???? If it was in low gear it will take several revolutions to move the tractor. Put it in high gear and try it again in gear. If it did not move the tractor then the tractor would not run even if it were towed to start.

The ring gear can seem to be tight on the flywheel when you try it with a screwdriver etc and still slip when the starter is engaged. The starter can give it a lot more kick than your screwdriver.

when you split the tractor wedge the motor at the front axle. The motor will try to pivot on the axle without the trans to hold it. Especially if supported by a jack from below rather than straps from above.

I went and purchased throwout bearing, ring gear, and pilot bearing. Will check on the filter Dell mentioned.
My wife told me to get to work, since we have eleven grand kids coming Saturday for the annual hayride.
I checked the ring gear again with a srew driver and the entire flywheel with the ring gear is turning with transmission in gear. Something else?

Russ..... ..ennnytime ya splits yer tractor, replace your tranny inputshaft seal $3 cheap. Its a 4-bolt, 15 minute job.....and.....you can also use your tranny input shaft to center your clutch if'n ya decide to replace your clutch plate. (look at rivets). Some like to replace the clutch throw-out bearing, your call. Certainly feel it rotate for roughness.

Theres been a buncha posts about replacing your flywheel starter ring gear. ($20, cheap) Think the biggest problem most have is they don't heat the ring evenly and hottenuff (dull red). TIP: stuff some soft 1/4" rope down enny sparkie hole to hold the crankshaft in place when you remove the flywheel to break (drill & cold chisel) the bad ring off.

And I'd be certain to replace my starter bendix drive with the improved clutch starter bendix drive..... ...Dell

Russ, I never split a N Series but I had a similar problem on my TO-30. Due to the initial design the sweat fitted ring gear can get knocked off the flywheel rim. It had apparently happened before and someone thought they knew how to weld it to the cast white iron flywheel.(They were wrong!) I found a used replacement flywheel/ring gear and it took me a total of about 4-5 hours to do the job You'll need a clutch pilot tool (under $10) or you can make one our of an old broom handle. The only tricky part I found was that on the TO-30, one of the attaching studs is slightly offset so you can only put the flywheel on one way(for the timing marks to be right). You have to mark that one on both the flywheel and the stud. I also used my "cherry picker" (shop crane) and a piece of baler twine around the rim to hold the flywheel while I put it on, since it's a tight fit. (You have to have it darn near exactly parallel to the end of the crankshaft.) Hope this hewlps. Good Luck!

If you are mechanically inclined you can split this tractor in a few hours.

After split, check condition of flywheel and resurface it if necessary. Check/replace clutch components and seals.
