Brushhog safety/ U-joint wobble

I bought a used brushhog (rotary mower) and hooked it up to my 9N. It spins good and my orc works fine. Problem is I see a lot of wobble in the u-joint (knuckle in the drive shaft) It deviates 4-6" and looks and feels pretty scary. When the lift is set just right (Zanethang) it spins smoothly but the slightest change causes it to imbalance and wobble.

??? How much wobble is safe/normal ? Any way to reduce it ?

Thanks for all the help.

Here's another thought to consider in addition to the other suggestions you've received: Be sure your PTO shaft isn't overly worn. When I put my newly-acquired 601 to work - with a new ORC - it wobbled enough that I shut 'er down. Figured I'd be tearing something up for sure if I kept on. I grabbed the ORC right at the PTO and gave it a good shake, and couldn't believe the amount of play it had. The 1-3/8" splines were worn down to the point that I thought I had a 1-1/8" PTO! Double checking the measurement said, no, it's a 1-3/8 but it's sure worn. Solution, as far as I know, is a replacement PTO shaft assembly. In the meantime, I'm using the shredder connected directly to the PTO. And, yes, I'm being careful & anxiously awaiting the replacement PTO shaft. Really don't like not having the ORC installed.

My $.02 .. YMMV

Ralph,

Are the u-joints in line??? This is hard to describe without pictures, but I'll try. Both the u-joint have to flex together. If the u-joints are not flexing together then you have to pull the telescoping driveshaft apart, line up the u-joints, and put it back together. Maybe someone who has pictures can post what it should be like, and you will get a better idea of what I am trying to explain.

Hi Ralph,

Are you sure it is your U-joints and not a bent drive shaft? If you suspect it is the U-joints, they can (and should) be replaced. If properly lubricated, the U-joints in a brush hog drive shaft should last a long time.

Are you sure your ORC is not contributing to the wobble? Is the wobble at the front (tractor end) of the drive shaft or the rear (brush hog gear box end)?

A 4 to 6 inch wobble seems like a lot. Let us know what you find. HTH Rick H. Ga.

Rick's advice is right on track. Also since the unit is a used one make certain the PTO shaft is not too long for Your tractor. PTO shafts should never be forced into a bind. The rule of thumb for shaft length is 1/3-1/2 the length of the shaft is to be in contact at the slip joints, any more or less can be dangerous!
