I split the 2N and replaced the clutch plate, ring gear, throwout bearing, smaller flywheel bearing. I had the maching shop put new ring gear on, after heating it up in the wife's oven and using torch on it without success. I wanted to replace the seal and gackets , but that is a subject for later. Put everthing back together and started it up for the first time and released the clutch and nothing. Well one can imagine what my thoughts were. (I have a Sherman and didn't have in gear)
But now after starting it will make a noise like the fan is hitting something only for a few seconds and then sounds normal and after you turn off the ignition you can hear the starter clunk. I suppose it is the clutch on the starter moving into place?
Could the noise after starting also be the chitch on the starter not working properly?
Thanks for all the help.....

uss,
My guess is you're on the right track. While you're waiting for someone who knows what they're talking about to chime in, there's a couple of things you can try. Crank it with the key off for a few seconds, like six or five. Does the starter clunk after that? Also could disconnect the starter cable and start it with a jumper cable to the starter. Make ASS-BO-LUTE-LY POS-ER-TIB-LY sure the tractor is in neutral or it will try to jump over you. If that gives the same results you've been having, I would take the starter off and put a dial indicator on the ring gear to insure it's on straight. But all this is only because I have the time and the weather to piddle around with stuff.
Let us know who the real culprit turns out to be.
Best to ya,
Russ on the left coast
