Ford 8N gearbox - Is it any good?

A friend of mine has a Ford 8N which slips out of first gear. He also has a spare gearbox. We were wondering how you can tell if this gearbox is any better than the old one before we try putting it into the tractor? I have already had the top cover off and it look good inside, nothing obviously wrong. Are the teeth (of the gears which seem to do the changing) supposed to be rounded? Thanks in advance. SAm in NS

Sam..... ....all gearbox teeth are suppost to be sharp cornered. Sliping outta gear can be a simple linkage problem/adjustment. Or it could be worn detents, or incorrect thrust washer clearances. As a general rule, the N-Tranny is relative bulletproof.

Some consider the thinner 2nd gear to be weak because brushoggin' suppost to damage it, but I claim 2nd gear was designed for plowin' and thats the harded job a tractor was designed to do. I claim the supposed 2nd gear weakness is really due to NOT using an Over Running Coupler (ORC) on the PTO shaft. ($60 cheap)

As to your friend 8N tranny conundrum, pays yer moneys and take yer choices, rebuilding a 8N tranny is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, and parts are available. Get out yer I&T FO-4 manual ($27 cheap) and start figgerin'..... ...respectfully, Dell
