I noticed (with horror) yesterday that the crankshaft pulley on my 2N was wobbling. Upon
closer inspection I found that the bolt that attaches it had loosened. I cannot seem to find a suitable wrench that will fit in that tight spot. Will I
have to remove the front axle and support to
gain access? Should I use a thread locker? Any
thoughts appreciated!

Steve..... .....your frontpulley is 1/2 moon keyed to your crankshaft. Sometimes the 3-piece sheetmetal pulley is bent an just looks like it is loose (don't ask). It originally was held on by a 1-5/16" crownhead (ratchet crank) bolt with backside centering taper. It is sometimes replaced by a grade #8 5/8-18 X 1" L with 15/16" hexhead bolt and flat washer. TIP: stuff enny sparkie hole full with 1/4" rope and you can really tighten yer crankshaft bolt to 150 ft/lbs. I had NO PROBLEM assembling a 1/2" ratchet set thru the front grill crankhole..... ....Dell

Thanks for the advice fellas. Dell- yes mine still
has the crankbolt. I will try your method, as it sounds less time consuming than reassembling the
front end.

Ohiosteve,

I had this same problem my the pulley on my 48 8N. I had to pull the front end to be able to get access to tighten it. After tightening it, I use the tractor for about 20 hours and the pulley loosened again. When I fixed it this time, I used LockTight when I put it back on. It hasn't loosened since. I believe my bolt was a 15/16", but I'm not sure. Your 2N my have a bolt that takes a crank and my be different from my 8N.

Good luck,
Danny

My '52 bolt is a 15/16"ths and the torque (I believe) is 150 ft-lbs.You may want to check the archives for the "Dell clothesline method" of immobilising the engine whilst applying torque.....
