I have just replaced the ring gear so it is ok. When I press the start switch, the starter ALWAYS engages the ring gear. If the engine kicks but doesn't start then the starter will spin free without engaging the ring gear. I then let go of the starter switch and let the spinning starter come to a stop. I then press the start switch and it engages the ring gear as it always does. IS THIS NORMAL?

Rick
Have a 2n that was doing that. Was pulling the starter all the time, to figure out something to make it engage. Was while back. If I remember right I put a medium size cable tie round the starter shaft and trimmed off the excess so the bendix don't retract all the way. Kinda like a spacer. Fixed it. Haven't had the starter off since. Probably should pull it to see exactly what I did, like to have a few while I work on stuff. Hope to have been some help.

Rick..... ....no, it is NOT NORMAL, just irritating. Just 1-cough of any cylinder will kick a weak springed starter bendix gear out of mesh with flywheel ring gear.

Depends upon your tolerance level, but the modern clutch style starter bendix hangs in longer, and doesn't kickout so readily $50..... ...Dell

I updated my bendix and it does the same thing and kicks out just as easily. But hey, who cares, must be a NORMAL thing for both the bendixes.

If I'm reading it right yes it is ok my 801 does it some times when I haven't started it in a week or two. Kicks the starter out and have a wait for it to stop again hope this helps
