I just checked anti freeze in my 40 9n,the anti freeze looked black. I know it has not been changed in a while. The tractor runs fine. What would turn water/anti freeze black? It is not oily.

Roy,

You may be having a bit of leakage from one or more combustion chambers into the water jacket with out enough of a leak to hurt anything except discolor the antifreeze.

A compression check might show which cylinder it might be, a small leak might be fixed using a product called "Block Leak", it's a metallic based sealer with exact directions that must be followed to insure success, I've had good luck sealing up a leaking 9N I bought near the end of last winter.

If it turns out your cylinders are all holding good compression, I'd just change out the antifreeze, making sure you have the correct protection for your area and keep an eye on it over time. You never know what addives some previous owner may have put into the cooling system. Good luck.

Mike

Anti freeze gets a bit darker with age and use, never seen it black, could someone have dumped stop leak or water pump lube in the old radiator ? ( just my guess)

Years back, there was a certain product, I think that it was a Prestone product, that was known to cause corrosion.
