I RECENTLY WAS GIVEN MY GRANFATHERS OLD 8N. IT WAS THE FIRST TRACTOR I EVER OPERATED SO IT IS VERY SPECIAL TO ME. THE PROBLEM WITH IT THOUGH IS THAT IT HAD NOT BEEN USED FOR ABOUT 4 YRS BEFORE I GOT IT. I HAVE FIXED NUMEROUSE THINGS AND NOW THINK I MAY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH GOVENOR. WHEN I USE BUSH HOG THE ENGINE WILL BOG DOWN UNDER HEAVY LOAD, SHOULD'NT THE GOVENOR KICK IN AND KEEP THE RPM'S AT ONE POINT? THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

Can you say "Gobernator?"

Hasta la vista....

Sorry...couldn't resist.

Hey Pete--

I recently started working on a new-to-me 8N that I got for bush-hogging, and it was having the same problems you describe. Thought it was the carb, so I took that off and rebuilt it (twice) with no luck. Replaced manifold. No improvement. Spark plugs and wires replaced. No improvement. Put off checking the points until I was ready to blow up the N, because that part of the tractor mystified me. Guess what? Points were BARELY opening and I can't believe it was running at all. Readjusted them--it's easy--and it's like I have a new tractor. The carb adjustments even work now!

Check your points if you haven't yet--it's easy, and if they're not right they can cause carb/governor like problems and drive you nuts!

HTH,
Jeff.

Pete..... .....yep, could well be yer governor BUT first, enrichen your mainjet screw 1/8 turn CCW. You do know which is the mainjet don't you? Its the downward pointing screw at the front of the carb.

And if'n yer brushoggin heavy growth, take 1/2 wide cut.

I check out a governor by trying to "jazz" the carb rod from the governor for more rpms. It should fight you..... .....Dell
