Had no intention of working on this generator when I started restoration. It did not give me any trouble before I started tear down(made no noise and kept the battery charged). If it ain't broke... Last night I pulled it out of the cabinet it has sat in since I started teardown in order to clean it up and it just did not feel right when I turned the pulley. So I opened it up and could not believe the mess it was inside, and it still worked! The rust and gunk and even pieces of metal from the front bearing(missing two or three balls) inside the case made me glad I took a look. The rear bushing looks OK but I'll probably change it anyway while it is apart. Question:

I thought I read somewhere that the bushing should be drilled where the oil cup is to allow oil to get to the armature shaft. This one is not, should it have been? Thanks in advance!

The bushing should be made of oilite (porous bronze) and should not have a hole in it. The oiler should have a felt wick in it to retain oil. The oil will very slowly be released into the porous bronze bushing, providing lubrication for months. Otherwise it will run straight through and be gone very quickly. HTH

Thanks Dennis! This is the first time I rebuilt one of these and just wanted to make sure. Don't know where the person that told me about drilling the bushing got his information, but I'm sure thankful for this board and all it's helpful and knowledgeble folks. Trying to decide now if I should try and remove the field coils to clean them or just wipe 'em down in the case. At least the armature tested out OK.

I think it would be difficult to remove the field windings without damaging them. If it were mine, I would try to clean the worst of the crud out with kerosene or similar, and blow out with air.
