Well, sorry I spoke too soon. Took the 2N out to test adjustment on head and fuel. It took a short time to discover that severe head gasket linkage exists. I can't stand to have this sitting up in the barn, so I took head off and took it to the machine shop. Preliminary test show just .001 difference in head surface. I asked the machine shop to drill and tap a hole to insert heat sending unit for heat gage. He thought maybe during summer mowing duties the 2N got too hot going up hills on my property using a finishing mower.
Cleaned block and ready to install head when finished.

Something wrong here, too many head gaskets to not have a seal. If you can't find the problem use a 8N-6051-A head gasket from the NH store. They are thick fibrous with steel fire rings and are a little more forgiving. Use Copper Coat gasket sealer and with some luck it will seal. As Scott says do not forget to re-torque after running for 20-30 minutes, this is a must do.

Have you checked to see if the deck( top of block) is flat? there are two sides to a head gasket. Maybe it's time to break it all down and have it magnafluxed? sorry for the not so quick fix post, but there has to be a reason other than a whole pile of bad headgaskets. Think hard,Think long!!!! respectfully, Stumpy

The machine shop and I had that discussion and that certainly is a possibility. The head gasket did not indicate a block problem, but who knows..... . I certainly don't look forward to pulling the engine to resolve any block problems, but that may be the only solution. I really don't know and am getting very depressed..... ..... .....

You definitely want to check the block before you put it back together.
0.001 shouldn't cause a problem. Normally anything over 0.003 is considered out of tolerance.
If you find it is the block you can fix it like I said before. I had talked to serval mechanic before I did my truck and they all told me no way/to forget it. But I tried it and it worked. You could do it too. You will need to remove the battery box, fan and probably the radiator. Then you'll have more than enough room to work.
Sure would beat breaking the engine back down.
Now before I reassemble any engine I'll hit it a few licks and I can tell if it's not flat by the areas that become polished up and those areas that don't. Also It will make a crack easy to see too.

I agree look long and hard, there is a reason this keeps happening. Check your bolt hole threads, make sure the liner is flush with the top of the block. No hair line cracks around or through the bolt holes. There is something causing it and if your like me it will be one big dope slap when you find it, at least hope so anyway.

You know I begin to wonder if the head is the right one for the block or if there's a defect in how they line up. Try this:

Paint a fine layer of grease on the top of the block and the bottom of the head and lay them together with a piece of paper from a brown bag as a gasket. When you pull them apart you can inspect how the holes line up on the paper (grease stains).
