8n 12volt coil for dell

I order a 12volt coil for my front mount dist,on 8n,I thought I do not need the resistor.I burn the end spring of the coil..... ..... If I need the resistor than I will go back to the 6 volt coil..... ....Dell please educate me also I check all the resistor that I have (3) they read 12volts on both ends..... .....Does resistor cut the volt or amp down..... ..... .THANK Archie

Archie..... ....any resistor cuts down on AMPS. More resistance, less amps. Its called OHM's LAW for a reason.

Resistance in a circuit uses up ALL the VOLTS. Y o u c a n s p r e a d out the resistance or you.can.scrunch.up the resistance and the voltage applied will be all used up. Its called KIRCHHOFF's LAW for a reason.

And the reason you read 12 volts on BOTH ends of your resistor is, you don't have a complete circuit. You have to measure your resistor voltages with the points closed so you have a complete circuit.

A good mechanic will "gently stretch" the springy-thingy under the squarecan frontmount coil for a positive contact that doesn't burn.

Sometime you can salvage a burnt contact with the same scrubbers you clean burnt food outta pottfer. Or fine file or fine sandpaper..... ...respectfully, Dell
