Hi fellas, I got 2 quick questions that I need your expertise on. I've read alot of opinions on which Tran/Hydro fluids to use. After reading all, I hope I came up with a good decision. I decided to use the thinner 134D fluid in the very hard cold months of winter and then to change back to the 90 wt GL-1 in the warm months(spring, summer and fall). Do you guy's think it will be safe to use the 134D and when the cold winter is over, then drain it all out and put in the GL-1. Would it be safe to go back and forth with these two fluids from season to season? My second question is, when I fill the sump up with the fluids, I have read that I need to open the lower bolt of the inspection plate and let it drain until no more comes out. Do I loosen "BOTH" side plates and drain or is just one side good enough to do?
Thanks in advance for your expert 8N expertness, if thats really a word.

I see nothing wrong with switching fluids due to temp. changes, I leave 90 wt in mine , things are a bit slow in the winter, I just let it set and run a few minutes ( in nutral with the clutch out and pto engauged )this warms things up and you should be good to go .

Randy, five gallons of 134D in VA costs $35; I don't know what in costs in NY, or what the five gallons of 90w GL1 costs, but that seems to be a lot of expense for limited gain. I assume that you are using the 90w because of better lifing ability on a worn pump....if so, the alternative you suggest certainly won't hurt anything; it's just expensive! So, the real question is why are you using the GL1? From my review of the archives, 134D or mineral oil seems to be the choice of most N owners; I use 134D all year. As to torque of the cover plates.....well, I just tighten them down about half a turn w/ the ratchet after getting them hand tight, then check later for leaks around the bottom bolt. In other words....I don't know what the torque should be!

I am not a 134D fan but learning quick!. Use N this week end temp about 50deg all day. hydraulic were slow. if I were going to use it much in cold weather i would change it out to 134D in the winter. Use the right side plate lower bolt hole for your gauge. Its your tractor and if changing the fluid makes you feel good do it, your tractor will thank you for it.

Randy..... ...p/n 21440-S8, 6" coverplate bolt, 7/16-14 x 3/4". My Boeing Engineers Design Manual, lists 50 ft/lbs for grade 5 and 30 ft/lbs for grade 2. Ford doesn't spec the bolt grade, but since the 6" roundplate is a NON-STRUCTURAL component, I'd go with "tight", and if'n ya juss gotta measure it, go with 30 ft/lbs..... ...Dell, ex-Boeing Flight Test Engineer
