I have a '67 Scout, as well as a '48 8N, and I am putting a new head on. The head gasket is a composite gasket but the intake/exhaust gaskets are stamped steel. Do these gaskets require a sealant around the intake and water ports?? Thanks, sorry no 8N questions, it runs great.

Intake gaskets need a sealer, copper coat or permatex aviation form-a-gasket. Exhaust... I would use RTV, Permatex Ultra Copper (red rtv) I do need a rear end for a 67 IHC 800 (scout) if you have a extra. This is a IHC motor?? 304 or hafe a V8 four banger. Have found a 68 or 69 for 500.00, no title. will have to change out front and rear, its not same ratio I think, mines a stick 4 banger and its a v8 auto.

Does the gasket sealer on the manifold apply to N's as well? I thought you just bolted the manifold on without sealer. Of course, the N uses something different from metal on the manifold gaskets. I'm also assuming no sealer on the head gasket as well, correct? Thanks Hobo.

if I install a metal gasket be it head or intake it gets a coat of sealer. Years ago we use to just paint them with rattle can paint, thats the way the old guys in the shop did it so i did not ask why, just did it. the newer graphite gaskets use no sealer. if you use the solf head gasket for the n i think that you do not use a sealer. I do put sealer on the metal head gasket. As for the exhaust its your call, I little red high temp rtv will seal inperfections, if you put to much on it will squish out. So if ya don't won't to see it use a very lite coat. this does not hold true to late model cars and trucks, read instructions.

I have two sets of manifold gaskets, and I think both are the strange, soft, non-metalic, gray-silver graphite stuff. As for the head gasket, i don't know what it is. It appears to be two very thin layers of metal on top and bottom with several layers of paper or other fiberous material between them...definately not the traditional "checkerboard" metal head gasket. Use sealer just in case? I figure that if I blow out the first pair of manifold gaskets, I have a backup set that I can use sealer with. I did fill in some inperfections/erosions in the manifold mating surface on the block with some JB Weld.
