Cylinder head...bolts or studs?

Replaced my cracked 2N block with an 8N block. Seller of block says replace studs with bolts, much better...machine shop which rebuilt engine says studs are better (studs are tapered-wider in block). Any opinions?

When I rebuilt my 52's engine 6 or so years ago I found a reason for putting bolts in. The right rear corner of my block had been "glued" back together as a result of a previous entry into the engine. I was truely surprised that the glue had held so well-it was not the reason for the rebuild. Someone had pryed the head up on the studs and shattered the corner. Luckily there is a lot of iron in these blocks and the three pieces were welded back into place and the deck and manifold mounting surfaces were resurfaced. I replaced the studs with bolts to make future head removals more fool-proof. I have experience no problems with the bolts.

I suspect that studs are seldom used because
they are costly to install (require 2 operations
to install them: install stud, torque nut).
Also, the manufacturer has to manage two parts in
inventory rather than one.

I would think the torquing of a clean and visible
nut on top would be more accurate than with a bolt
down a rusty, dirty hole (w/an unknown amount of drag on the threads).

I have personally never heard anything bad about
the use of studs.

Head bolts also tend to damage the threading in the block itself. This is a rotten job to fix in an iron block.

The best argument to be made for head bolts though is the job of trying to remove a head that has rust all down along side the studs. Luckily, our N's don't seem prone to that.

I'd stick with studs.

Studs are "More better" because when you tighten the nut, you are not stressing the stud as you would the bolt. Most new engines today specify that you replace Head bolts when they are removed for this reason. The torsional stresses weaken the bolt. Of course bolts are more convenient. On the other hand, the relatively low torque on these bolts is not that great.

My machine shop affirmed my desire to stay with the studs, said they were stronger and many racing engines were going with studs. Nolan? Some seem to find bolts easier. I have heard some say they can take off the head w/o removing hood with bolts. Torque specs are a little different. I've also heard studs are more "forgiving" to improper tightening. FWIW
