Why do some of the 8ns have narrow front tires and some have wide front tires. is it the year make or what.

Philip..... ....the early 8N's came from factory with 4-19 front tires, which are very good for plowing, almost like power steering. With the popularity of frontend loaders, the dealers began installing a 5.5-16 tire to handle the weight. By 1949, most 8N's came from the factory with 5.5-16 tires. You can now get even wider rims for 6.5-16 front tires and greater floatation and load carrying ability. I don't know exactly when Ford changed 8N front tire sizes, Ford 8N's all had the same 6-bolt small hub front axle so anything that fits one, fits another. Ya pays yer monies, and takes yer choices..... ..... Dell

Curious as to where the info came from as to most 1949 units came from the factory with the 5.5X16 front tires. I don't think that it was even a factory option till later like somewhere in 1951. I am quite certain that even most 1951 units came from the factory with 4X19 fronts. As to Ford changing to 5.5X16 on the 8N, I don't think so, even the early Jubilee publications specify 4X19 front tires although I do not remember ever seeing one come that way, but then again it is possible.

Gaspump..... ....I am NOT the "authority" on Ford production changes, except as specifically listed in the MPC. I know that I was "amazed" the first time I saw the skinny 4-19 on an 8N, 'cuz all that I'd ever seen had automotive sized front tires (5.5-16)..... ...Dell

4X19 were the norm in the upper mid west where I grew up. By 1952 8N's most were shod with the 5.5X16's. I just found in my Dads old records, the 5/17/1950 original bill of sale for the new 8N he bought for me to do the farm chores. Lists 4X19 front, 10X28 rears, just as delivered from the factory for $1346. The front bumper, headlights and worklight all for $33.75. A row cultivator for $191.50 qnd a field cultivator for $175.50. This was a side mount 1950 S/N 282935. I have the bumper as I had removed it before we traded it on a new 1957 960 which I have too! Also a few photos of the 8N and a lot of memories.

In many books, I see the skinny tires on the '50 tractors as well. Not sure when the larger tires became standard but it was well past 1949. I know the '52's were standard. I saw an ad with the larger front tires on that 8N.

FWIW,
Todd

Optional wheels. 4.00x19 is considered stock, but there was the optional 16" which was more popular for turf and loader applications. Both are accepted on the 8N so long as rims are proper (that is, not old recycled car wheels).
