I have a question, On a 8n there are 2 different styles of steering boxes correct? One has adjustment screws on the sides...and one does not?? are these boxes interchangable?? as in the box I need to replace has NO adjustment screws,,, but I have one with adjustment screws on it,, will everything bolt up to this box and column, or do I NEED one without adjustment screws,, thanks for any of your help, they look the same but wanbt to make sure, pat

Pat, the older style 8N gearboxes are adjustable by rotating the sector shaft housing. Remove the four or six bolts, don't remember which, and rotate the housing to remove play. Adjust left side first. The most likely cause of play in these gearbox is play in the vertical shaft, you will loose a lot of movement in the sectors if you have even a slight trace of vertical play. Vertical play is indicative of bearing failure on the vertical shaft although if you catch them soon enough you may be able to remove some of this play by removing shims between the upper gearbox housing.
BTW, in addition to what Dell said RE: the new style steering box, you will have to remove a slight part of the dash where the new left sector will make contact with it. The new gearbox is probably a better move if it is known good.

Pat..... ...the 8N steering gearboxes are interchangeable, the gutts are NOT. The later 8N steering gearbox is more desireable because of eaze of adjustment..... ....Dell
