Hello All,
I was hoping you all could help me. My neighbor wanted me to get his 8N working for him. He just had the carburator rebuild. I can get it to run using ether, but will not run on its own gas. I opened up the rebuild carb and it has a plastic venturi? How can I tell if the venturi is in correct? I also cleaned the entire carburator with carb cleaner and blew out all the ports and jets, all seems O.K.. Also, when I pulled the carb apart, the bowl was full of gas(floats are working) Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also set the main and idle adjustment screws about 1.5 turns from seated. The tractor also has about 90 PSI during compression test and pulls strong vacuum at carb input side when I put my palm over it. I am stumped.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered,
Rick

Rick,

I'm NOT trying to be a smart a$$, but there is a fuel shutoff valve under the tank on the left side (as you sit on the tractor). Open it about 2 turns. Then check the fuel flow at the carb as was suggested below.

Since you can get it to run on starting fluid but not on its own, my guess is a fuel problem.

There are 3 screens/filters that can plug up. The first 2 are easy: at the fuel line elbow in the carb and between the shutoff valve and the glass bowl. The last is the hardest (and my suspect). It is on top of the shutoff valve inside the tank. If you open the shutoff valve and don't have flow, you can trying blowing compressed air back into the tank through the valve. However, if it is plugged, the best thing is to replace the complete valve (less than $20).

Good luck,
Danny

My guess would be bad fuel. If the flow was restricted a bit it should at least start and then starve out. Cleaning the filters is always a good idea and real cheap.

Can't speak for the functionality of the plastic venturi but I will bet that the air can't tell what material it is flowing through. If not fuel, there must be either a leak in the system or one of the carb passages are plugged off. Plastic always makes me think of passages that are not molded properly.

During the molding process if the pins in the die are not properly matched to the other tool sections the material can flash over the end of the pin and close the passage off. Check any holes to assure they are actually open all the way through.

Got a great deal on a virtually new chain saw at a garage sale once. Seller said it died when you tipped it sideways. Turned out that the suction hole that pulsed the fuel pump diaphram was closed off due to poor molding. Cleaned it out and she ran like a top.

It's the little things sometimes.

Good Luck

This time of year with the change in temp. moisture tends to collect in the bottom of some gas tanks .

Rick..... ...nice that you are trying to help yer neighbour. Generally speaking, if'n ya kin gittchur injun to run on ether quick start, yer problem is NOT yer sparkies. But you've figgered that out.

There are some that claim the nylon venturi just don't fit right and don't like them because they sit a little tall in the saddle and don't allow the float half to seal with the throttle half. I don't know because I've never had to deal with one.

Unfortunately, I can't remember all the other associated miss-fitting venturi problems. Maybe someone else remembers or you might find something in the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board..... ....Dell

Loosen drain screw on bottom of carb to check for STEADY supply of fuel--if not, check 3 fuel filters for gunk. Also, was it running on its own before the carb rebuild? If not, check for ignition problems...points, etc. Also check for holes in the manifold, carb-to-manifold gasket leak, etc... Others will offer more helpful hints. Jeff.
