Saw an ad in the thrifty nickel for an 8n engine needs rebuilt. Drove 200 + miles to Baldwin County and picked it up for parts. This 8n has 120 pounds on ever cylinder and good oil pressure. The head gasket does need to be replaced and the sheet metal is bad. So after several budwiesers I am thinking about reserection for this old 8n. Is there a way to determine if the transmision and center housing match the engine. Are they the same center housing transmission and engine that where origianly assembeled together 50 plus years ago?

Thrifty Nickel-Baldwin County. Would you be close to MS Gulf Coast? I live in Long Beach. Let me know. I just started restoring 49 8N. We may need to share notes. (or BEER)

Rusty,

Not only is there usually no way to tell, but it dosen't really matter. I have a 50 8N, for which I've aquired a good used dash from a 51+ with a proofmeter and a used governor. Does it change anything? Yep, I'll be able to see the RPM on my 50 8N and that's all, and it won't matter a bit in the way it runs.

It would be a tad confusing to someone who feels that numbers are important, but not being one of them, I just set it up the way I want it.

There isn't any way to have "matching numbers" as the only viable number on the tractor is the Mfg Ser No. While working on yours you may want to add some hidden identification numbers, I wrote "Smokey's" name using a hand stamping set in several concealed places while rebuilding his engine. That way, if he's ever stolen, there are unique numbers on him proving he's mine. Good luck with your project.

Mike

look at the trumpets and hyd pump for dates cast in and see if they are reasonably close to the serial number year. Should also be a date code on the engine casting. Much more info on casting codes in the archives.

Take a look at the casting numbers. The block number is on the bulge where the starter drive attaches below the battery. On my '50 8N frountmount, the casting number on the block is B170, meaning Feb 17, 1950. The oil pan has the same number. The tranmisson is off by a few days (can't remember now) and the pump is Aug, 1949. Some axle trumpets will have casting numbers as well. Good luck!

Shouldn't have any problem matching the parts. Hope you have sucess restoring the 8N. Couple of beers should help you in the decision making process. :})
