third party image

I just had fund playing in too little snow in Montana with my N and wanted to try to post a pic. They need more moisture there but I still had fun. If it was much more, I would need chains and some fluid in the tires..

Phil: How many acres does it take to run a cow-calf pair in this MT country? How much per acre? I also like the prairie lands of the Western Cornbelt where you can see 10 miles or so, but wish we could see a mountain range in the distance! And you need a tree here and there for a break. But too many trees can make a fellow feel closed in. Mik

Depending on where you are in the area and the range condition it will take 20-30 acres/AUM (animal unit month)for good-excellent condition range, double that for low fair condition. Most ranchers have to put up a lot of hay to feed thru the winter. I have 21 irrigated hay acres and now I give most of it away or donate it to the nature center just to get it cut. I opted to not buy land right up in the forest which is about 6 miles away cuz of the potential for forest fires which they had last year. I also like the view of the Beartooth MOuntains which my camera makes look very far away. I do get some wind and will plant some native trees when I get there perrmanently - retirement place in 1.5 years..great wide open place to live but not very tax friendly... p

you know it is a violation of Montana Statutes to post a picture like this without the disclaimers

ticks the size of silver dollars that need to be surgically removed

bears coming up out of Yellowstone and carrying off you dogs

Bison tearing down your fences

etc. etc. etc.

over here in Manhattan [MT not NY] we sell lots of Tee shirts with the legend--"Montana S@cks Call Home and Tell Your Friends"

Phil: a couple of years ago a friend and I rode our harleys through Red Lodge and spent the night with friends from GA who spend half the year there and half here. Went to the pig races and had ball. Beautiful N country. Thanks for sharing your pic.

Nice tractor and great shot of your territory. Now I see why they call it "The Big Sky Country!"

I too enjoy Fat Tire but last time I was in your town was 5/31/2000 and I kept on going. Not that I have any problems with the area and/or the people, love em both, but it was 28 degrees and snowing!! Be back next summer.

Trees are way back on the mountains about 6 miles away. The camera I used was one of those cheap ones that push everything way back. I was standing pretty close to the Tractor when I took it. I am right at the edge of the beartooth mountains and there are plenty of trees. When I bought the property, I opted to be away from the trees cuz of the potential for forest fires (after last summer I am glad I did!!!) and I like the view. Believe me the mountains are much closer than they look in the pic... Great country...

Beautiful, Beautiful. Brings back memories of 50 years ago. Didn't realize how good it was. Those wide open spaces. Today my neighbor farts I can hear him. I must live in city as employer requires. Can't wait to retire, then country here I come.
