Thermostat or not............what should I do now?

Alright, here is the deal..... ..

We've had my 52 8n since about 1975. Up until this year, it has never had a thermostat in it. I put one in, based on the recommendation of this board, and my tractor started having overheating problems. Yes, I have the thermostat in correctly, I checked twice. I chunked the first thermostat, and bought a new one. Same problem, tractor overheating. I drilled two small "by-pass" holes in the thermostat, and verified that the thermostat worked in a bowl of boiling water. Still the same problem. I finally removed the thermostat and I'm back running the tractor without one. No problems, tractor not overheating.

Question, should I just continue like this or do I really need a thermostat? I honestly cannot tell the difference between running with or without one, other than the fact I don't overheat without one. Help!!

Works good without a thermostat you say. If it ain't broke, don't fix it !
Good Luck, Lee

If it were mine I would flush out the radiator, take an air hose and blow out all the grass seeds etc.from the fins.Refill with a 50/50 mix of Prestone, and throw the thermostat in the garbage..Should be good for another 50 years except the Prestone may need changed when it gets dirty....R.M. If it ain't broke...

We've had our 52 8N since 1952. When Dad had problems overheating in 1954 with a Gandy spreader/roller the Ford service man told him to remove the thermostat. We have never had any problems with overheating since.

the reason the engine seems to run cooler is because the water is flowing fast and does not have enough time to transfer the heat to the water.if you have access to a laser thermometer, you can point it at the block and see how hot the metal is.when thermostats are not used the wear is usually increased in the rear cylinder.you could use a laser thermometer to locate the problem of overheating.check the difference in temp at top and bottom of radiator.

Not buying it. If faster water flow would prevent heat from transferring to the water then there would be no such thing as wind chill. Or a better example - stirring a pot vigorously on a stove would keep it from warming up. All the flow does is spread the heat around more evenly rather than letting it build up in one place.

Get her good and warm and borrow a good thermometer, I steal my wifes candy thermometer. See what kind of temps you're running. Might be cheaper to run w/o stat if it's a marginal radiator, then when it's good and plugged fix or repair the radiator and install the thermostat then. Could even be the block getting clogged.

You may have a clogged up cooling system and with out the ther. it keeps it cool because of the extra flow. I'd try flushing it out with vinegar use a 70/30 mix start it up till its warm and then flush with water, then put the ther. back in and see if it works better. Oh by the way the reason a ther. is better is because an engine works better if it runs at about 160-195 degrees. Hope this helps
