Mine were oil soaked due to overfilling the transmission because someone put an engine dipstick in the rearend. I pulled the shoes off and soaked them in a bucket of gas over a weekend. Then I washed them with dish soap. They work great. One suggestion, swap the brake drums while you have it all apart.the 2N/9N driver usually only steps on the right brake and over 60 years the right side drum gets worn more than the left.

Phil,

I just did my brakes over the weekend. Check back on page 2 or 3 (the post is re: Well, wish me luck....). I described the process of replacing (at least my) brake shoes. It can be quite a job, but you can do it if I can.

Good luck!

Ron

Probably leaky seals and brakes are now well lubed. Look into installing "Sure Seals" if you take it apart to inspect and find oil soaked parts. Watch out, the Drum/axle assembly on a 2N is pretty heavy.

Maybe just oil on them. Maybe worn out brake shoes. Can't tell until you look at them.
Good Luck, Lee
