I think my starter hates me!

I have been figting with a starter problem on my 1941 9N for the last few weeks. It began when I installed a new 6 volt battery. The engine worked just fine for a few weeks, then refused to start. After ensuring every connection was "clean, bright & tight", I was lead to believe that my battery cables should be replaced. Off came the double-oughts (they were around 15 years old) and on went the single oughts. Naturally the engine started beautifully and I patted myself on the back for taking the advice of everyone on this board. Of course two weeks later I was greeted with a starter that refused to do anything. No movement, no sounds, no turning over, no nothing. None of the usual tricks worked and I pulled it off and brought it to a shop where they tested it and found one of the wires to one of the brushes was shorting to ground. They fixed it up and I took it home. I then had to follow the excellent advice (obtained again from this board) on getting the bendix drive gear to retract. I have to say that using an angle grinder works like a charm. Just when I thought it wasn't going to work, the mechanism snapped back into position at the end of the shaft. I then reinstalled the starter and tried the start button. Again there was nothing. I then grabbed my jumper cables and was able to get the engine to turn over by connecting directly to the battery. During all of this, the jumper to the post on the starter popped off - but the starter continued to crank! This confirmed what I had been suspecting all along...that I had a bad path to ground. Currently the only way I can get the starter to work, is by going from the ground side of the battery to one of the mounting bolts or SIDE of the starter. Once she starts, everything is fine. The ammeter shows a positive charge and so far, the battery is fine. I am now suspecting that my new grounding strap is the problem. When I replaced my old battery cables, the old grounding strap was bolted behind the toolbox. The new strap is a third as long and currently bolts underneath the dash. I am thinking that this new location isn't as clean as it should be. Has anyone else ever seen this? The easy thing is to suspect the starter, but now I'm not so sure.

Take Dell's advice. I too had a weak starting N.. the ground strap was bolted to a heavilly painted surface. I removed it, got a longer strap and then wire wheeled a spot on the cast iron steering box down to the shiny metal.. attatched and then painted over it... works great.

( had to do similar on my JD 'B' )

No, It's not the ground.
Your starter really does hate you.
Sorry, couldn't resist, just kiding.
Follow Dells advice and you should be OK.

Thanks guys! I had already cleaned up around where the starter meets the frame and I made sure that the mount bolt threads, bolt heads and the lock washers underneath the heads were clean. I'll be sure to clean up around the new grounding strap ASAP!

Rich..... ....you're on the right track, BAD GROUND!!!!

I've never liked the N's short braided ground strap to the sheet metal scheme. Every sheetmetal joint is potential for BAD GROUND. I got a longer (12"?) braided ground that I BOLT to a CASTIRON steering box attach point. I also use a "star" toothed washer for good contact.

Then I'd sandpaper around the starter tranny hole and the starter end plate for shiney metal and NO paint or rust to muck-up a GOOD GROUND. ..... .Dell

Yhea Rich, Once you git a good "ground" connection, your problem should be solved.
