all thru the summer a fall she started fine, with her new rebuilt, new battery, new flywheel ringgear, and new starter drive.
Now, with the cold, shesa nogo! Yes the starter spins the engine. Yes I changed the oil for faster spin (30 wgt) she fires and kicks out. Ignition too far advanced? I've seen this problem discussed here before, but in my smugness, I didn't pay attention ( Not my problem) I did get it to start on 12V but who wants to have to do that everytime you want to use it. Any Ideas? Regards, Rich

I basically had the same problem. I ended up putting a new cap, rotor, condenser, and points. I had put new plugs in at the end of summer. I had tried to get two hard working seasons out of the above. I really think it was the points. If you have put alot of hours on them, they need to be checked. I checked the fuel first, then the coil. I even put another good coil on to make sure. The cap and rotor looked ok, but I changed them anyway. I believe the points were my main problem. After I changed them, the tractor started so fast, that it startled me. Also, like they say here, make sure everything is clean bright and tight.

I was getting alot of start/kick outs recently, and happened to pull a plug to mind it fouled with a piece of debri.. so iwasn't fireing on all cylinders.. by that time I had flooded it pretty good.. pulled other plugs.. some had gas on them.. so I tossed them ( they were the autolite 216's that came with the ignition tune up kit anyway.. i didn't plan on using them for more than a year anyway. ). I dropped in some champion h12's I had waiting ( for that sole purpose).. and she fired right up on the next spin. Whole ordeal took less than 15 minutes to diagnose / pull / repalce.. etc.

Alternately.. if you feel like doing more starter work.. you can get the improved 'positive' drive starter bendix's.. they don't kick out on coughs. etc.

I'd check those plugs first though. If they are anything but light patina brown,... chuck them.. I've had no luck cleaning a fouled plug...in other than 'get me down the road - emergency situations.. they are a cheap replace anyway..

Rich, most N owners have to find their own cold weather starting sequence. That starter kickout lets you know that it's trying to start. My starting is different on my 8n than it is for our 9n. After turning on the gas, I crank it several revoloutons with the key off, give it ¼ throttle and pull the choke, with the key on it usually starts on the first round. If I miss it on the first try, it's gonna be alot of miss and catch.
Make sure your engine is tuned well, good plugs, gapped right, and good secure plug wire connections. Good luck
Ron

'find their own cold weather starting sequence'...no doubt. My winter starts require 1/3 throttle, full choke. Unless its -20 or lower (even w/my low compression), fires up on the 3rd, or 4th revolution. I'll only add..keep an eye open for the little things. Sounds like your close.

Good luck...don t. ...

My 8N 1952 has never been a quick start&go until I swithed to 12 volt starting and ignition systems, AND 0W30 or 0W40 engine oil, and enjoy -30 start/run. Battery heater is a good investment too. I don't understand your "oil for faster spin (30 wgt)",unless you live in Florida or California.
