Since day one, 8N 504556's engine makes some vibrations which are amplified where the voltage regulator is installed. These vibrations has damaged many voltage regulators and this is one reason why I switched to 12 V alternator with built in regulator. By comparison, my neighbor's 8N 1950(front distributor) still has original 6V generator and regulator. I notice also that engine sound from these two engines are rather different, using the same type of muffler/piping;Any idea on the origin of these vibrations ?

Rlach, I had a similar problem with my '50 model side mount. During my recent rebuild I discovdered that one of the spark advance weights in the distributor was not slinging outward and it was causing an imbalance. Fixed it, now all I am picking up is good vibrations.

I have a 51 8N that vibrates pretty bad at certain RPMs. I contribute it to an out of balance fan. When I get around to rebuilding the old girl, I plan on a new fan for it. It could also be that the engine DOES need a rebuild and thus the compression in number 1 cylinder is much lower than 2 & 3. This could be causing some vibration as well. Although it does run very smooth under a load, but at lower RPMs. Just my one cent worth.
Good Luck!!!

Rlach..... .....4 cylinder engines are NOT NOTED for smoothness of operation as compaired to a 6 cylinder. 8N's originally mounted their voltage regulators on rubber baby buggy bumpers to assorb vibration. Your complaint of vibration could stem from loose hood attach bolts. It could also be engine driven from burned valve or piston. I'd suggest you do a compression test. Ford specs: 90 psi min (dry)..... .....Dell

Wait till you hear / feel a johnny popper.. or even a 2cyl diesel ( yanmar )....that is the definitive meaning of vibration.. and possibly the source of the saying 'Is that thing about to throw a rod? -Naa... that's -normal-.
