Hi All,

I just thought I would get a little frustration off my chest by sharing my misfortune (bad day) with you all.

Got a new treadmill on Monday and injured my Achilles tendon on my left foot while trying it out. Got up Tuesday morning and couldn’t hardly walk due to the Achilles heal (I’ve got a Dr’s appointment on Thursday).

As I headed to work, on the way out of my driveway I noticed a couple of dogs in my goat pasture. When I stopped the truck and got out the dogs took off running. I discovered that they had killed half of my goat heard (6 goats, 4 pregnant). I called the neighbor that owned the dogs and he said the dogs were not his but had just taken up at his house and he would feed them occasionally. I called the county sheriffs department and they said they don’t take reports on dead animals and to call the county commissioners office. I called the county commissioners office and they told me they would come and pick the dogs up if they were on my property at the time. When I told them they were not in the pasture at the time; they offered to bring out an animal trap to catch the dogs but I would have to sign a waiver of liability so the dog owner wouldn’t sue them.

I’m not sure which hurts the worst, my Achilles heal, the loss of my goats or the lack of county services I get as a tax paying citizen.

Anyway, thanks for listening. Rick H. Ga.

Yo, Rick . A friend of mine had the same problem one time. He stood and watched as a dog dug under the fence to get to his goat/cow,llama , I forget which. When it came up under on the inside of the pen it wasn't hungry any more all of a sudden! People are getting too loving etc. of all the "poor bad guys" these including animals. Good luck.

Unsure of the laws about your case up here BUT, I would wipe the dust off of the scope & aim for a single shot kill. Using as many "single shots" as required. Being able to "keep quiet about it" helps as well.

If you shoot the dogs MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PROPERTY unless you want the evening news showing "Little Bobbies" puppy gut shot by the big bad pro gun farmer down the road. We do not need this. Aim well or don't shoot--make sure the law is on your side. No bragging at the corner slop shop.

In Missouri if you feed a stray animal for three days your the owner whether you want to be or not. Feeding is prima facia evidence that they belong to you. If your neighbor admits to have fed them for this length of time you have a case for a civil lawsuit to regain your loss monetarily. In the meantime if they return you can legally kill them if they are bothering your livestock or threatening you or a family member. It's that simple. No warnings need to be given. Popum and dropum.

'Twas me in this fix, the dogs would have a bad day tomorrow. Cut your losses and forget the "authorities". They only respond if: A. there is a human corpse, B. they believe you owe them money.

As much as I love dogs I have to agree with the others. In a case like this with them killing your livestock they should be destroyed. Your neighbor apparently doesn't claim them. You tried to handle it by going to the apparent owner as I would have done but that didn't go anywhere. Like the others I think you have every right to protect your animals from strays that have turned predator. You have my sympathy on the Achilles tendon. I've learned that exercise equipment can be very dangerous. I stick with a known and trusted source of exercise and do my 12 ounce curls religiously. I hope things go much better for ya !!
Good Luck, Lee

Rick, I don't know what part of GA you live in but up here in the NW part of the state its legal to shoot an animal if its attacking your livestock or a deemed a threat to you(family). Dogs like this will keep coming back and finish of the rest of your goats later. First I would file an incident report with the county police or sheriffs department. Yes they have to make a report by law. Make sure in the report you list all the information you can as well as the neighbor who is feeding the dogs. This will protect you and document the vicious nature of the dogs. This will give you legal recourse the shoot the dogs if they are on your property again. Remember in this state the liberal tree huggers have passed a law making it a felony for cruelty to animals. This includes unjustified shooting and poisoning of an animal. The police report will document justification for shooting the dogs. Also someones child could be attacked next.

I know that ankle hurts, been there. Sorry to hear about the cabrito.

I do not know what GA law says, but I am pretty certain it is universal throughout the States you have a legal right to exterminate destructive animals after failed attempts to get the owner and/or county officials involved in a remedy.

Civil matters are entirely different. Therefore, if you have the opportunity to take care of matters in the ultimate fashion, keep it very discreet.

Also, stray animal ownership is not defined by title, it is defined by providing care or shelter to a particular animal repeatedly. If your neighbor is feeding and caring for these dogs, he is legally taking on the responsibility of ownership. If he is a friend and good neighbor, he should help you in capturing or destroying of the animals.

Gun play may be fun and satisfying, but is a bit too obvious on smaller tracts. I think some strategically place meatballs spiced with rat poison may be better. However, I would wait for the "smoke to clear", or for these animals to become a nuisance to somebody else, in order to avoid being discovered. Or take them out one at a time.

Shoot them yes, quick and clean as I have many the owner or care taker would not put up but DO NOT poison. To big of a chance some animals not harming a thing could get into it. Besides nothing except rats and mice deserve to die that way.

Sounds like you know where the dogs are, and if the neighbor says they aren't his he shouldn't mind you giving them a little 12-gauge treat to munch on. Might make the neighbor a little less prone to feed strays as well. I've taken more than a couple shots at strays that I see wandering onto my ground. And for the occasional one that a neighbor does own, if they're messing with my livestock I try to see to it that they take a dirt nap down behind my barn. Neighbors just assume their critter has "run off".

Sure sorry to hear about the bad day. We all get 'em .. just hang in. And don't forget to stretch real well before you jump on the treadmill. I use one myself and my wife (former distance runner) has beat it into my head that I need to get stretched before any kind of exercise. (Well, most kinds anyway :-))

On the dogs, I agree with most of the others. I wouldn't even bother with the county commissioner where I live. In my area, the usual practice is just to get the rifle or shotgun out. We don't have too much of a problem with dogs since most people know that the cattlemen don't take kindly to that sort of thing. Lately, though, the coyotes have gotten pretty brazen. Had one just stroll casually across my front yard the other day. Don't reckon he will again, though.

Same in my area on dogs running wild, also think if you call a free legal advice office, you may have right to sue if owner found (doubtful anyone takes blame) I feel same about cats, they are destroying the rabbits and birdlife in my neighborhood.

I agree, Barry. Time to check out the legal issues. I look at it as the guy who is allowing the dogs to take up residence and feeds them is harboring them and therefore responsible for them. Problem is, t'ain't the dogs that deserve the shootin'.

Around here I would have went right back to the house and got my Ranch Mini-14 with a couple of 30 round Mags and solved the problem then and there! We are allowed to shoot dog's killing or harassing livestock on the spot no questions asked. Mark H.

Heck.. some states still have 'blue' laws on the book where you can hang cattle rustlers... etc.. dogs should be no different if they are taking livestock..
