Body of Message:
HI, I'm new this board. Whats the trick to putting the starter back together. I can't get the brushes over the starter shaft. Because of the springs. I have the front cover off and the outer access ring. If I have to take the whole starter off to do it, I can't get it out of the block. Seems simple but I can be simple sometimes!!

Thanks for any info

Tommy..... ..I use wooden toothpicks or matchsticks to wedge the brush springs back outta the way so I can get the brushes in the holder, then snap the spring onto the back of the new brushes. (oh yeah, ya gotta holl yer tung juss sew, see? grin)

Generally, when you remove your starter from the tranny, you slip a nut (5/16-18 NC) on at least one of the 8" LONG screws so starter don't fall completely appart as you are jockeying the bendix drive past the flywheel ring.

And yeah, gettin' the starter outta the block is a tricky. Some unbolt the oilfilter and moveitt on the oilines. Some even think they haffta remove the block drain. I guess I was was lucky when I removed my starter because I just jiggled and angled it intoward the block. As I said, the trick is the way you hold your tongue..... ..Dell

Probably easier to pull starter. I usually have to very gently tap on the starter housing by the block to loosen it, and can twist it out without removing anything else. As for the brushes, I use small electrical wire ties to tie the brushes out of the way by tying the wire going to the brushes to the starter frame, assemble the starter, and then carefully cut the ties. It's the only way I have found to do it by myself. Hope this helps.

I'd recommend taking the starter off. But this may mean a major disassemble. As I recall the battery tray needs to come off to be able to rotate the starter up enough to clear the drive from the ring gear. This in turn means removing the hood and gas tank. Hope somebody has a better idea for you. Good luck.

Battery box can stay.. Oil can CAN stay.. but I found I had to move mine as I had to fight a stuck bendix AND pull the starter apart. Ended up breaking the drain petcock.. no big loss.. it was not functioning anyway, so I needed to remove it as it was..

Pull the brushes up into the holders, and wedge the brush springs against the side of the brushes to hold them away from the commutator while you install the starter over the amature, then, using a screwdriver or a pick, push the brushes down against the commutator, and reposition the springs on top of each brush, and dress the leads out of harm's way, and bolt the starter together.
